Fifa Live Update : Spain Won The Fifa World Cup 2010

Spain won the World Cup for the first time when they beat Netherlands 1-0 after extra time thanks to a goal by midfielder Andres Iniesta.

Iniesta fired home the winner when he was put through in the area by Cesc Fabregas. Keeper Maarten Stekelenburg dived to his right and got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out.

The defeat was heartbreaking for the Dutch, who were down to 10 men after John Heitinga was sent off in extra time. It was their third World Cup final loss after 1974 and 1978.

European champions Spain had looked the more assured early on in the clash at Soccer City as a nervous-looking Dutch side ceded territory to their slick opponents.

Stekelenburg was forced into a save after five minutes when Sergio Ramos headed a Xavi cross goalwards while Spain forward David Villa crashed a volley into the side netting with the goal looming.

But a series of freekicks and bookings, including two strong challenges by Dutch midfielders Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel, shook Spain out of their rhythm and stopped them from producing the swift-passing game that got them to the final.

BIZARRE INCIDENT

Netherlands offered little in attack and the nearest they came to a first-half goal was a bizarre incident when Gregory van der Wiel attempted to give the ball back in an act of sportsmanship.

The fullback's 60-metre punt bounced up and over Spain captain Iker Casillas, forcing the startled keeper to leap and tip it to safety.

The game continued with frequent stoppages and few chances, until Wesley Sneijder split the Spanish defence with a perfectly-weighted ball into the path of Arjen Robben after 62 minutes only for Casillas to save brilliantly with his feet.

In a lively end to normal time Villa had a shot blocked in front of the line, an unmarked Ramos headed wildly over the bar from five metres out and Puyol was lucky to escape punishment after hauling down a furious Robben.

In extra time it was Stekelenburg's turn to save with his feet when substitute Fabregas was sent clear by Iniesta.

Netherlands had to play with 10 men for the last 10 minutes of extra time when John Heitinga was sent off for hauling down Iniesta on the edge of the box.

The little midfielder got back on his feet and soon after was celebrating scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final to send the delighted Spanish fans into raptures.

Spain and the Netherlands will play extra time in the World Cup final after a 0-0 draw in 90 minutes.

The teams created few clear chances at Soccer City but the game opened up slightly after a cagey opening hour in which the Netherlands broke up Spain's attempts to get its passing game going with physical play that brought the Dutch six yellow cards.

Netherlands winger Arjen Robben broke free in the 62nd minute but his low shot to the far post was brilliantly kept out with the toe of goalkeeper Iker Casillas' right boot.

Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg then knocked David Villa's close-range finish over the bar before Spain defender Sergio Ramos headed over the bar while unmarked.

Spain piled up the chances without scoring a goal against the Netherlands on Sunday in a World Cup final that was still even at 0-0 following 60 minutes of play.

The Spanish controlled much of the play at Soccer City and had the two best chances early in the match as the vuvuzelas blared through the stadium.

Defender Sergio Ramos sent a header from Xavi Hernandez's cross on target, but goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg made the save in the fifth minute. Spain striker David Villa's left-foot volley from Xabi Alonso's cross then hit the side-netting in the 12th.

The best chance for the Netherlands came in the 18th, but playmaker Wesley Sneijder's 30-yard free kick went into the waiting hands of Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Two minutes later, Arjen Robben ran down the left, but the Spain defense cleared the ball out for a corner.

The Bayern Munich winger had another chance in injury time, making his usual move of stepping toward the area and trying to curl a left-foot shot into the net, but Casillas knocked it out for a corner.

But the match was not pretty for much of the half, with the Dutch committing 11 fouls and the Spanish contributing five.

The worst came in the 28th when Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong was lucky to escape with only a yellow card after kicking Alonso in the chest while going for a ball.

Pedro Rodriguez, who was starting in place of Fernando Torres for the second straight match, also had a chance for Spain after running through the middle in the 38th, but his shot went wide right. Alonso then sent a free kick wide.

Both Spain and the Netherlands are playing for their first World Cup title. The Dutch have twice lost in the final, in 1974 and '78, while Spain is playing in the title match for the first time.

Paul the “World Cup Octopus” predicts Spain will win the World Cup. While prognosticating Paul might be the “World Cup Octopus”, Paul is not the only animal predicting Sunday’s outcome.

In fact, Paul’s publicity is sparking some animal world controversy. In Singapore, Mani “The World Cup Parakeet” is getting its feathers into a bunch over a disagreement with Paul’s prediction. Mani claims the Netherlands will win Sunday.

Animal “analysts” are amazed by Paul. He’s a German octopus who consistently predicted his own country’s advance through the World Cup. Paul predicted from his aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany correctly that Germany would defeat Ghana. And ironically, he predicted that his own country would fall to Serbia earlier in the World Cup.

So how did an aquarium in Oberhausen get its sea creature involved in the World Cup? His caretakers would drop two glass boxes in his enormous tank each time, one with a German flag and one with the flag of Germany’s opponent for the respective game. Inside each box were add delicious treats. The box that Paul goes for first was deemed his pick.

Yet, despite the reaction from Mani, Paul didn’t become an animal oracle overnight. Octopus Paul has been doing this for 2 1/2 years. He was correct at 11 of 12 games in the 2008 European Championship.

Larissa Riquelme, the captivating lingerie model who enchanted soccer fans around the world with her enthusiastic support of the Paraguayan World Cup team, saw her pledge to run n ude through the streets of Paraguay end in heartbreak when Spain defeated her favorite team in the quarterfinals last weekend.

The beautiful Paraguayan has good news for her eager fans who were disappointed by the loss. Riquelme says she will run naked through Asuncion, even though Paraguay did not win the World Cup. The curvy model says her n ude run "will be a present to all of the players, and for all the people in Paraguay to enjoy."

Larissa Riquelme saw her n udity pledge end in heartbreak on Saturday. Her national team held on tight against heavily favored Spain, but the Spaniards ultimately prevailed with a late goal.
